About the Festival
Trashigang Tshechu takes place at Trashigang Dzong, a fortress built in 1651 overlooking two river valleys, in Trashigang — the largest district in Bhutan. The festival draws diverse communities, including the semi-nomadic Brokpas of the Merak and Sakteng valleys, Khengpa residents, and visitors from neighboring districts.
Cultural Significance
Every village in the district holds its own annual festival, but the three-day Tshechu at Trashigang Dzong is the highlight. Ceremonial ablutions open the observance, followed by rehearsals, masked dances accompanying the unfurling of a sacred Thangka, and a display of an older sacred textile alongside performances of the eight manifestations of Guru Rinpoche.
