About the Festival

Kurjey Tshechu is a one-day festival held at Kurjey Lhakhang in Bumthang, honoring Guru Rinpoche, who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan. Locals from the Jakar and Kurjey villages gather to pay obeisance to this venerated spiritual figure.

Cultural Significance

The celebration features sacred masked dances performed by monastery monks, including the Guru Tshengye and Shinjay performances, concluding with the unfurling of a giant Buddha/Guru Thangka painting known as a thongdrel — a visual blessing for attendees. The Bhutanese government fully funds and supports this observance, underscoring its national importance.
