Jakar Tshechu is held at Jakar Dzong — the 'Castle of the White Bird' — in the Bumthang region. Established relatively recently, in 1999, the festival features mask dances performed by monks according to traditional Buddhist master teachings, alongside folk songs and dances specific to Bumthang.
Cultural Significance
Viewing dances imbued with sacred symbolism is considered a very auspicious and sanctifying experience. Beyond religious observance, the festival serves as a community gathering where locals dressed in their finest clothes reconnect, forge friendships, and celebrate together — blending spiritual practice with considerable merriment.
