About the Festival

Dechenphu Tshechu is held at Dechenphu monastery in the northern Thimphu valley, near Dechencholing, honoring the revered local deity Gayngyen Jakpa Melen. Initiated in 2003 under the Fourth King's direction, the festival has become a cherished community event blending spiritual devotion with cultural celebration.

Cultural Significance

The celebration features traditional mask dances and religious ceremonies, including Zhana-Nga Cham, Genyen Kunchaam, Shazam Cham, and Ngachaam, with contributions from the Royal Academy of Performing Arts. Attendees wear festive attire while musicians play traditional instruments, drawing crowds from Thimphu and beyond.
