About the Festival
Chhukha Tshechu was established in 1988 as an offering to Guru Rinpoche, held at Chhukha Ngedrup Tse Dzong in southwestern Bhutan's sub-tropical forest region. The area is home to both Ngalop and Lhotshampa communities, giving the festival a distinctive cultural diversity.
Cultural Significance
This three-day celebration features masked dances, regional folk performances, and songs, with the major highlight being the unfurling of a Thongdroel — a large sacred tapestry — of Guru Rinpoche. Large crowds gather at the Dzong's courtyard to attain merit through their devotional participation.
