Gelephu Mindfulness City is King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck's vision for transforming Gelephu into an innovative economic hub — a 1,000+ square kilometer development integrating Bhutanese cultural principles with sustainable urban planning.
The masterplan, developed by BIG, Arup, and Cistri, incorporates the nine Gross National Happiness domains. Designer Bjarke Ingels describes the vision: nature is enhanced, agriculture is integrated, and tradition is living and breathing — not only preserved but also evolved.
The city features eleven neighborhoods organized using mandala principles, with waterways creating natural divisions. Paddy fields along the rivers serve dual purposes: flood protection and wildlife corridors, preserving elephant migration routes and biodiversity.
Transportation systems double as cultural landmarks, including inhabitable bridges housing an airport, spiritual center, healthcare facility, university, agricultural greenhouse, cultural center, and market. The Sankosh Temple-Dam represents the development's philosophical foundation, combining engineering with spiritual symbolism.
Permeable pavements manage stormwater, while local materials — wood, stone, and bamboo — inspire vernacular architecture, maintaining authentic Bhutanese character within a thoroughly modern development.
